Why Birdbaths are Essential for Your Outdoor Living Space
Birdbaths are a fabulous addition to any outdoor living space. Not only are they decorative and invite living beauty to your yard or garden they serve quite a few important purposes for the birds visiting them as well. Birdbaths are basically shallow ponds that are created with a basin filled with water. They not only look lovely, they provide freshwater for birds to drink from and bathe in which is as important during the cold months as it is during dry hot seasons as well.
Design
For quite some time, molded concrete birdbaths seem to appear on virtually every yard in many neighborhoods but today they are available in a wide variety of styles, sizes, materials and even objects. Birds are typically not concerned with the aesthetics, the design is merely for the viewer but what is important is that there's at least two inches of water in the deepest part. Some birdbaths of larger size even have islands in the center which discourage predators of the feline species. Birdbaths are made from many different types of materials including marble, mosaic tiles, glass, plastic, terracotta, concrete, ceramic and various types of metal. There are some that have a recirculating pump that provide some form of water feature and others will use a solar pump or even have a light attached. However, most birdbaths are simply man-made ponds without the fuss which does require you to scrub it out and replace the stale water with fresh water. This is extremely important because there are negative health effects for birds that drink dirty, stagnate water that could be fouled with algae, fungi or excrement.
Bird Safety
Birdbaths are a sure way to attract wildlife to your yard. It is important that your model has some type of perch and you don't want it too deep or birds can drown. It is a good idea to add a few rocks to at least part of the bath to create a shallow section if your bath seems a bit too deep throughout. You also need to consider the positioning of birdbaths. Placing one in your backyard where your bird-hungry dogs run is probably not a good idea. If you have animals that may attack the birds, place the bath in your front yard instead. Birds can't fly as well when they have wet feathers so it is important to position the bath so they can see all around them and in a place they can feel safe. Ideally, they should be kept under a tree with branches where they can quickly make an escape. Birdbaths can be the most important feature of a landscape. Birds will eat slugs and other insects to keep them from ruining your garden and they can bring a smile to your day when placed in view of a window where you can watch the birds from inside your home. Birdbaths are well worth the minimal effort they require to keep them full and clean.
